The European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) includes accessibility requirements for covered e-commerce services. Its service requirements have applied since 28 June 2025. That does not mean every website has the same obligations: the Directive defines its scope, provides a microenterprise exemption for service providers, and contains rules for particular products, services and transitions.
Establish whether your business is in scope
The Directive defines an e-commerce service as a service provided at a distance through a website or mobile service, electronically and at a consumer’s request, to conclude a consumer contract. It defines a microenterprise using a staff threshold and financial limits. Read the official Directive, check your national implementation and discuss your business structure with a qualified adviser. Do not decide from the size of your website alone.
Review the whole buying journey
Where the requirements apply, check product discovery, navigation, keyboard access, text contrast and zoom, field labels, validation errors, payment steps and confirmation messages. Include third-party payment and booking components, mobile pages and customer support. A design that looks clear to one person may still block someone using a keyboard, screen reader or magnification.
The accessibility check-up flags common issues to investigate. It is a starting checklist, not a legal opinion or certification. JupiWeb’s e-shop scope starts at €890; accessibility review and fixes should be scoped against the actual catalogue, checkout and integrations rather than assumed to be included in a base price.
